Julian Assange is the Wikileaks founder and activist who is currently imprisoned. The DAO has so far raised $7.5 million in ether. The fund will go toward Assange’s legal bills and raising public awareness about his case. Founded in December 2020 last year, Assange DAO is raising funds from the community to bid on NFT artwork.
Julian Assange has been a well-known journalist, whistleblower and activist who launched the website Wikileaks. He is being investigated by the US government for publishing a series of Army intelligence disclosures handed to him by Chelsea Manning in 2010. Her former name has been Bradley Manning). Because of his involvement in leaking secret American intelligence documents, the US government wants Assange extradited to their own nation. He is being sought in the United States for espionage against WikiLeaks’ decision to publish confidential and classified government documents to the public. He is currently in a British prison fighting against the ongoing extradition case. In case the extradition case finds him guilty and he is handed over and convicted, Assange faces up to 175 years in prison.
In January last year, the judge ruled that Assange should not be sent to the United States for spying and hacking. He was refused to go out on bail as well, and the judge stated that Assange “still has an incentive to abscond from these, as yet unresolved, proceedings.”
Like FreeRossDAO, which was organized as a platform online to free up the Silk Road founder Ross William Ulbricht from his imprisonment, Assange DAO is also a group of cypherpunks fighting for the release of Julian Assange from the British prison. The method of raising funds and releasing him would be through the NFT artwork method.
Surprisingly, the DAO’s goal is clearly to bid on a unique NFT created by acclaimed digital artist Pak. Pak together tied up with Julian Assange in collaboration on the “Censored” collection. The collection, called Censored, is scheduled to release for the auctione on February 7, 2022, online. The scheduled release on February 7 will help to get the proceeds of the auction which will be donated to the Wow Holland Foundation.
The proceeds would further be donated and used for payment of any legal expenses of the case. It is being believed that Assange would be facing expense issues related to fighting the case so the community has come up for help.

Possibly in case the Assange DAO wins the NFT bid, the NFT will be taken by the DAO and its contributors will receive the DAO’s governance token, JUSTICE. The token will be given in proportion to the contribution of the ETH. Contributors will then have the responsibility to decide what they will do. They will then decide to vote on what to do with the future roadmap for NFTs and DAOs through the governance model and framework. It is stated that there is no initial goal for a target increase. The DAO uses JuiceBox, a fund pooling platform to raise the funds. Token holders can vote on governance proposals for the direction of DAO activities going forward.
The model of Assange DAO is similar to the DAO dubbed as BlockbusterDAO. It was formed to raise funds to the tune of USD 5 million to acquire and interestingly defunct the business that was carried by the movie rental by Blockbuster.

Assange DAO started to when it began forming a Telegram Group on December 10, in 2021. The Telegram group acted as a seed for the fund raising although it was not clear what they would place in NFT artwork. Moving further, Assange’s brother Gabriel Shipton joined immediately and told the group that the founders of WikiLeaks are working on an auctioned NFT collaboration to raise money for his release campaign.
